Another Way of Living
Peacefully Simply Together
This congregation is part of the Church of the Brethren, founded in Central
Germany during the year 1708. Since our beginning, we in the Church of the
Brethren have viewed ourselves in partnership with all Christians, believed the
entire New Testament to be our guide for daily living and given priority to
serving one another after the example and teaching of our Lord.
As Brethren, we believe that the way of Jesus is socially relevant and
intellectually sound for every age. When the values of Christ conflict
with the values of the world around us, God gives us strength to count the cost
of our faith commitment and suffer if we must in order to remain true to Jesus
Christ, the Lord of all life.
As one of the three historic peace churches, we believe that human life is a
sacred creation of God and that the ways of war and violence are not compatible
with the Spirit and teachings of Jesus Christ.
In Christ we are united as one body and yet also set free to express our
diverse opinions according to the leading of His Spirit. We believe that
there should be no force in matters of religion and that the greatest gift of
God's Spirit is love which is an identifying characteristic of the true Church.
There are 148,000 members of the Church of the Brethren in the United States
and Puerto Rico, with new fellowships in the Dominican Republic and Brazil.
In the Virlina District, there are over 12,000 members in 90 congregations.
